West Mamprusi: 21-year-old electrocuted while stealing copper wires from transformer

A 21-year-old man, Martine George, has tragically died after being electrocuted while attempting to steal copper wires from a transformer in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 27 January 2026, around midnight on the Walewale-Kukua Road, opposite the NOVA fuel station near the Zipline junction.

George, a native of Kukuazugu in Walewale who lived in Kumasi, had travelled to Walewale and allegedly climbed the transformer to cut copper wires. He was electrocuted in the process, fell from the transformer, and died on the spot, leaving the community in shock.

The theft caused a power outage, affecting several homes and businesses in the area. The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) has previously warned against such criminal acts and urged residents to report anyone involved.

According to Roger Akampare, West Mamprusi Municipal NEDCO supervisor, thieves have targeted multiple transformers across the municipality, including those at key locations such as the VRA office, substation points, and local institutions, leading to frequent and intermittent power outages, particularly at night.

The West Mamprusi Police Detective Unit has sent George’s body to the Upper East Regional Hospital for a postmortem to determine the exact cause of death.
