Ghanaian broadcast journalist and lawyer Serwaa Amihere has issued a public apology after comments attributed to her describing Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC), Legon, as a “breeding ground for homosexuals” sparked backlash from the school and its alumni.
In a post widely shared online, Amihere apologised to the PRESEC community, saying she regretted the remarks and acknowledging the hurt they caused to students, parents and old students of the school.
“I apologise to everyone who has felt slighted by the comments, especially the PRESEC community and the PRESECANS. I apologise, and I assure you that it won’t happen again,” she said.
Backlash
The apology followed a strongly worded statement from PRESEC management condemning the remarks as false, reckless and offensive, and warning against what it described as the stigmatisation of students.
The school, a Presbyterian mission institution, said the comments undermined its values of discipline, Christian morality and academic excellence, and risked exposing students to ridicule and emotional harm.
While some critics said the remarks unfairly labelled students and reinforced prejudice, others argued the comments were made in the context of informal rivalry among senior high schools and were not intended to cause offence.
PRESEC said it stood by its rejection of the characterisation, stressing its long-standing record of producing leaders across public service, science, business and civic life.
