Supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) locked up the district office of the National Health Insurance Authority in Ejisu on Monday, protesting what they say is the exclusion of party loyalists from government appointments.
The group, made up largely of youth in the constituency, stormed the facility and locked the premises, temporarily disrupting operations at the health insurance office.
The protesters said many supporters who campaigned for the party ahead of the 2024 general elections had been overlooked in the distribution of public sector positions.
According to the demonstrators, the perceived neglect has created frustration among party grassroots in the area, prompting the action.
They argued that their contributions to the party’s electoral success had not been recognised and called on authorities to address their concerns.
Officials of the National Health Insurance Authority had not immediately commented on the incident. It was also unclear whether security personnel had been deployed to reopen the office.
The protest highlights growing tensions among some grassroots supporters of the National Democratic Congress following the party’s return to power under President John Dramani Mahama after the 2024 elections.
A few weeks ago the Bosomtwe office of the NHIS came under attack when some NDC supporters locked up the premises over similar concerns.
It is not clear whether any action has been taking against them by the party or state security.
