Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT) has announced a temporary reduction in some intercity transport services in order to redeploy buses to support intracity operations in Accra.
The move is aimed at easing pressure on commuters, particularly during peak morning and evening hours.
Head of Communications at Metro Mass, Mohammed Mubarak Watara, said the decision follows a directive from the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, who has urged the company to support private transport operators by increasing public bus availability during rush hours.
Speaking on Citi FM on Thursday, 15 January 2026, Watara confirmed that the Minister had engaged management of Metro Mass and its sister company on the need to make more buses available for commuters in the capital.
He admitted that the company is currently operating with a limited fleet but said management has taken steps to maximise available resources.
“We have extended our working hours and adjusted deployment. Even though we cannot cover every route because of the limited fleet, we have increased our intracity operations,” he said.
According to him, services have been intensified on high-demand routes, including the Adenta corridor, where all 10 electric buses are now operating daily from as early as 4:30am and continue beyond 8:30pm.
Additional arrangements have also been made to support commuters along the Kasoa corridor.
“We operate Kaneshie–Kasoa and have created an additional station in our yard for Kasoa commuters. We also run services from Circle to Amasaman and Nsawam,” he stated.
To sustain the expanded intracity operations, Watara disclosed that Metro Mass has reduced the number of buses deployed to some long-distance destinations.
“We have scaled down trips to places such as Kumasi and Cape Coast to free buses for intracity commuters,” he said.
The company says the adjustment is temporary and will be reviewed depending on fleet availability and commuter demand.
