A special operations team deployed by the Inspector-General of Police has arrested 19 people in a targeted anti-crime operation in Kumasi, focusing on drug trafficking and related offences, police said on Wednesday.
The team, comprising 111 personnel and led by DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil and ASP Samuel Mustapha Abenzuo, carried out the operation in areas identified as crime hotspots, including Alaba and Thinker, which authorities say are known for drug peddling and substance abuse.
The exercise forms part of a broader effort to clamp down on robbery, drug trafficking, illegal firearms, and violent crime within the Ashanti Region.
Operation
Police said officers conducted intelligence-led patrols across the metropolis, including areas around the Manhyia Palace enclave, before moving into the targeted locations.
During the operation, officers arrested a shop operator identified as Madam Ola Ruth after a search of her premises uncovered dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
A further 18 suspects were apprehended in the same vicinity, bringing the total number of arrests to 19.
Items retrieved
Exhibits retrieved included substances suspected to be heroin or cocaine, dried leaves believed to be cannabis, opioids, and items commonly associated with drug use, police said.
All suspects have been transferred to the Suntreso Police District Headquarters, where they remain in custody pending investigations and possible prosecution. The seized items have been handed over for forensic analysis.
Police said the operation was conducted in line with professional standards and forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and restore public confidence.
Authorities added that similar intelligence-led operations and patrols will be intensified across the region to curb crime and improve security.
