The Deputy Director of A Rocha Ghana, Daryl Bosu has said that the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) should not be too complacent, insisting the agency is still far from delivering its full potential in the fight against illegal mining.
This comes after NAIMOS announced that it had arrested 237 individuals in connection to galamsey, with the majority of these individuals being foreign nationals.
Speaking in an interview with Asaase News, he explained that although the recent arrests are a good step, they do not show the full capacity NAIMOS has. “I think that NAIMOS can do more. NAIMOS has the capacity to really change the tide. But at the moment, that’s not what is happening.”
According to him, the agency was set up with a clear plan to be more present in mining areas across the country. “Initially as they were set up, they really planned to be strategically located in about six mining hospitals across the country, be more permanently located,” he noted.
He stated that NAIMOS is “still scratching the surface of what they really can do,” and warned that the agency should not assume that the arrests alone mean they have succeeded. “Maybe they shouldn’t get too complacent and say they’ve been successful,” he added.
According to Mr. Bosu, he believes there are still major gaps in the fight against galamsey that NAIMOS must fix. “There is still a lot of challenges and gaps,” he said, adding that if these gaps are resolved, then NAIMOS can genuinely prove its effectiveness.
But for now, he says there’s still too much work to do to be very excited about saying that NAIMOS has been very successful.
