“We came from behind, but the tide has turned” — Agyepong campaign confident ahead of January 31 NPP primaries

The campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Kwabena Agyepong says it is confident of victory in the party’s 31 January flagbearer election, insisting that delegates across the country have warmed up significantly to his candidacy.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (9 January), Willem Coleman, executive aide to Agyepong’s campaign, said although the former General Secretary started the race at a disadvantage due to years out of active politics, sustained grassroots engagement has shifted perceptions among delegates.

“We have to admit that, per name recognition, we came from behind,” Coleman said, noting that Agyepong had been “illegally, unconstitutionally, unjustly and unjustifiably” removed as General Secretary in 2015, an episode that negatively affected his political career.

According to Coleman, the campaign has focused on direct engagements with delegates through town hall-style meetings, where Agyepong explains the circumstances surrounding his removal and outlines his vision for the party and the country.

“A lot of lies were told about him at the time, and people believed them,” he said. “But as he explains himself, you see doubts erased, especially during the Q&A sessions.”

Coleman argued that contrary to public speculation, the campaign’s internal interactions show strong support for Agyepong among the electoral college.

“The delegates call us and tell us they support him. That will show on January 31,” he said, adding that the former General Secretary has largely repaired the damage to his political reputation “at least to the people who matter — the delegates.”

The campaign aide described the ongoing effort as a “huge political comeback,” predicting that it would be studied in future political science classrooms.
