Prempeh I Airport runway still not completed after government’s year-end promise

The John Mahama administration has missed its stated deadline for completing the runway expansion at Prempeh Asante Agyemang I International Airport in Kumasi, despite earlier assurances that the project was nearing completion.

In a Facebook post dated 17 September 2025, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the airport’s 1,981-metre runway, was being extended to 2,320 metres to accommodate medium-sized aircraft and support international flight operations.

This update was communicated by the Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe.

He said the project was “90% complete” and expected to be finished “by the end of the year.”

More than six months later, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, confirmed in a separate Facebook post on Friday (9 January) that the runway expansion was still ongoing, indicating the end-of-year deadline had not been met.

Visit

Amoakohene said he received the Board Chairman, Managing Director and Board Members of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) at the airport to inspect the runway works and the wider Airport City development.

“The visit provided the opportunity to jointly inspect the ongoing runway expansion project and the broader Airport City development,” he said, describing the initiatives as critical to positioning Kumasi and the Ashanti Region as a major aviation and logistics hub.

24-hour economy threatened

The delay comes as the government pushes a 24-hour economy policy, under which airport operations have already been extended.

Night operations at Prempeh Asante Agyemang I International Airport had been extended from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., while Tamale International Airport now operates from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., to improve passenger convenience and support round-the-clock economic activity.

Amoakohene said the project aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to modernise strategic infrastructure and expand regional connectivity, adding that the government remains committed to completing and fully utilising the airport developments.

Neither official gave a revised completion date for the runway expansion.
