Meta Platforms is expanding its content settings for teenage users across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger globally as part of efforts to provide age-appropriate online experiences amid growing scrutiny over child safety on social media.
The company said the move builds on an initial rollout introduced in selected countries in October, aimed at limiting exposure to inappropriate content for younger users.
Meta also announced a new feature on Instagram designed to reduce repetitive exposure to specific content types and promote a more balanced feed for teen users.
The update comes as social media companies face increasing legal and regulatory pressure in the United States and European Union over the impact of their platforms on young users.
In April, Meta warned investors that regulatory and legal challenges related to youth safety could significantly affect its business performance and financial results.
The development follows a recent court case in which a Los Angeles jury found Meta and Google negligent for designing platforms deemed harmful to young users, awarding damages to a plaintiff who alleged social media addiction from childhood.
Meta said its “13+ content settings,” which filter out material considered inappropriate for teenagers, will remain the default option for teen accounts.
It added that a more restrictive “Limited Content” setting will be introduced on Facebook and Messenger later this year.
The company explained that while some content related to topics such as nutrition, fitness, and mental health can be useful, repeated exposure without balance may not be appropriate for teenage users.
Meta said the new measures are part of ongoing efforts to ensure safer and more balanced digital experiences for young users across its platforms.
