Police gun down escape bid, arrest suspects in Chelsea bus robbery

The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspects, including an alleged gang leader, in connection with the deadly robbery attack on a Berekum Chelsea FC team bus that claimed the life of footballer Dominic Frimpong.

The arrests follow an intelligence-led operation conducted on 15 April 2026, at Atimatim in Kumasi, after a manhunt launched in the aftermath of the 12 April attack on the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District.

Police identified the suspects as Mohammed Ahmed, also known as “I Can Do,” believed to be the gang leader, and Bawa Gideon. According to police, the suspects attempted to flee and opened fire during the operation, leading to a gun exchange.

One of the suspects sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital under police guard, while the other remains in custody assisting with investigations.

Weapons and items retrieved

Police said a search conducted during the operation led to the retrieval of a pistol loaded with two rounds of 32 ammunition, eleven BB cartridges, pepper spray, a locally referred “blantine,” desert boots, mobile phones, and a black pullover.

Suspect admits involvement

During interrogation, Mohammed Ahmed reportedly admitted involvement in multiple robbery incidents, including attacks at Nkawie and Fufuso, as well as the assault on the Berekum Chelsea team bus.

He also named three alleged accomplices—Dauda, Huefe, and A.T.—who remain at large. Police have since declared the trio wanted and are appealing to the public for information that could lead to their arrest.

The robbery attack resulted in the death of Dominic Frimpong, a player of Berekum Chelsea FC, sending shockwaves across Ghana’s football community.

The club and the Ghana Football Association have both expressed deep sorrow over the incident, with calls for justice and improved security for teams travelling across the country.

The Ghana Police Service commended officers involved in the operation for their professionalism and persistence, noting that public cooperation played a key role in the arrests.

Authorities have assured that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and that those arrested will be put before the court to face the full rigours of the law.
