The Money summit: “People have money but don’t know where to invest” — Acquaye

The Business and Financial Times (BnFT) will host the 2026 edition of its Money Summit this week, with a focus on rebuilding investor confidence and sustaining Ghana’s recent macroeconomic stability, its chief executive has said.

Dr Godwin Acquaye said the summit — now in its sixth edition — will bring together key players across Ghana’s financial ecosystem to discuss critical issues shaping the country’s economic future.

“This is a programme that brings together every institution that interfaces with money,” he said on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (1 May).

The summit, scheduled for June 2 in Accra, will explore emerging topics such as commodity-backed financing, including Ghana’s gold-for-oil policy, and assess whether such models are sustainable.

“We are looking into the future — whether this model will be sustainable and how we can maintain the macroeconomic stability we are currently enjoying,” Acquaye said.

He noted that recent gains in economic stability must be protected to support long-term growth, stressing the importance of investment and financial system confidence.

The theme of this year’s summit — “Building trust, capital and stability for Ghana’s economic future” — reflects ongoing efforts to restore trust in the financial sector following past disruptions, including the domestic debt exchange programme (DDEP) and the collapse of some financial institutions.

“It became difficult for people to invest because of trust issues. As a media institution, we are trying in our small way to rebuild that confidence,” he said.

Acquaye said discussions will also focus on savings culture, investment opportunities, and the need to channel idle capital into productive sectors of the economy.

“Some people have money sitting at home because they don’t know where it is safe to invest. We need to build that trust so capital can work for Ghana,” he added.

The summit will feature participation from the Bank of Ghana, commercial banks, community banks, and other financial sector stakeholders, with topics ranging from financial stability and inclusion to SME financing and digital innovation.

Organisers say the event, which is by invitation but will be streamed online, aims to provide practical insights to guide policy, investment, and economic transformation.

Acquaye urged stakeholders and the public to engage with the discussions, saying Ghana has the potential to regain its position as a leading economic force in Africa.

“We want Ghana to become that country everyone looks up to again — but that will require trust, investment and the right financial decisions,” he said.
