Dankwah: “Governance now outweighs party loyalty” in leadership choice

Performance in government is emerging as the decisive factor in choosing a successor to President John Dramani Mahama, according to pollster Mussa Dankwah.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (18 May), Dankwah said data from Global Info Analytics shows a shift in voter priorities away from traditional party loyalty toward governance outcomes.

“Performance is number one,” he said, citing polling figures that show 74 percent of respondents prioritise delivery in office, followed by vision, government service and personality traits.

He explained that voters increasingly assess potential leaders based on their record in government rather than internal party dynamics.

“We have a different kind of voters now… governance has grown beyond party politics,” he said.

Dankwah argued that public officials who focus on their mandates are unlikely to be perceived as campaigning, noting that routine ministerial duties — such as engaging stakeholders or implementing policy — do not constitute political positioning.

However, he cautioned that actions outside official responsibilities could be interpreted differently.

“If you see a minister doing something completely out of line with his ministry, then that may be seen… as looking for something else,” he said.

Despite growing public discussion around possible successors, Dankwah dismissed suggestions of intense internal rivalry, describing current debates as typical of democratic systems.

“Every party goes through turbulence when selecting a leader,” he said, adding that Ghana’s political history shows competitive but contained succession processes.

He also rejected the idea that an outsider could emerge unexpectedly to lead the party, insisting that frontrunners would come from established political figures.

“People who will lead are those in the frontline of politics,” he said.
