A rare early intervention by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders signals growing concern within the party over internal tensions linked to succession politics, a political scientist has said.
Jalilu Ateku, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, said the Council’s decision to step in at this stage of the party’s tenure in government was “necessary” to prevent divisions from escalating.
“It is not common for the Council of Elders to frequently come into the public space,” Ateku said on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (1 June). “But under the current circumstances, it was important for them to act to calm the situation.”
The Council’s statement follows increasing speculation about jockeying for the NDC’s future leadership ahead of the 2028 elections, despite constitutional provisions that delay flagbearer selection.
According to Ateku, the move reflects concerns within party leadership that perceived internal competition could undermine progress.
“The statement makes it clear that whatever is happening could affect the party’s forward movement,” he said, noting that ongoing activities by key figures have fueled interpretations of early positioning.
While the Council did not directly name individuals, Ateku pointed to developments such as campaign-style engagements and public tours that have heightened perceptions of rivalry.
He added that although no aspirant has formally declared intent, “actions over the past few months” have contributed to speculation.
The intervention, he said, is aimed at preserving cohesion as the party balances governance with long-term electoral strategy.
