The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a public warning over seventy (70) tertiary institutions whose academic awards are not recognised in Ghana due to regulatory and quality assurance concerns.
In a statement dated May 28, 2026, the Commission said the affected institutions, located in Ghana and several other countries, do not currently meet the requirements for recognition under Ghana’s tertiary education regulatory framework.
GTEC cautioned students, employers, professional bodies, and the general public to verify the authenticity of certificates, diplomas, and degrees issued by such institutions before acceptance or employment decisions are made.
According to the Commission, the institutions were identified following quality assurance assessments, although it did not provide specific details on the individual infractions that led to their inclusion.
The list spans institutions across multiple jurisdictions, including the United States, United Kingdom, Switzerland, India, Mexico, Liberia, Nigeria, Zambia, Italy, France, Guyana, Germany, Costa Rica, Cambodia, Barbados, Andorra, and Ghana.
They include universities, business schools, theological seminaries, management institutes, distance learning providers, and professional training colleges.
Several Ghana-based institutions were named in the advisory, raising concerns for students and graduates who may already hold qualifications from them. These include Debest College of Science, Arts, and Business; Faith University Seminary; Doxa Open University; Quest International University; Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Training School; Kingdom Living Bible Institute in Kumasi; Global Professional College in Effiduase; and Volta University College.
GTEC also highlighted a number of foreign and predominantly online institutions operating transnational or distance-learning models, including Atlantic International University, Akamai University, Monarch Business School, Swiss Management Centre University, Selinus University of Sciences and Literature, Texila American University, and LIGS University.
The commission urged stakeholders to exercise due diligence when evaluating academic qualifications and to seek verification from the appropriate regulatory authorities before accepting certificates for employment or further academic progression.
