Sheikh Ayub Ofosuhene Asare calls for unity, condemns political insults and social division in Ghana

A leading Islamic cleric has used the Eid al-Adha season to call for national unity and a reset of Ghana’s political culture, warning against rising intolerance, insults, and unethical conduct.

Sheikh Ayub Ofosuhene Asare, President of the Heralds of Islamic Message, said Ghana’s long-standing reputation for religious harmony must be protected through discipline, respect, and ethical leadership.

“We should be cultured, polite, and do things well… you can correct people without insulting them,” he said on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (27 May).

He criticised the increasing use of vulgar language in political discourse, warning that it fuels tension, particularly during election periods.

“Every time we are going to vote, you see tension in this country… we don’t know what we are doing,” he said.

Asare urged politicians across party lines to model integrity and civility, adding that leadership should be about service rather than division.

Beyond politics, he cautioned against social vices such as nepotism, corruption, and the glorification of wealth acquired through dubious means.

“Good character is more important than acquiring wealth in an unlawful manner,” he stressed.

He also highlighted Ghana’s tradition of tolerance, describing it as a national strength rooted in both cultural and religious values.

“We embrace all people… that is the character of Ghana,” he said, while warning that modern society risks losing these foundational principles.

On interfaith relations, Asare pointed to Islamic teachings that encourage peaceful coexistence, particularly with Christians, whom he described as close allies in faith and values.

As Eid approaches, he called on Ghanaians to reject tribalism and division, and instead promote peace, honesty, and mutual respect.

“We are all one… no one is above the other. Good character is what defines us,” he said.

He concluded with a call for citizens to demonstrate gratitude to God not just in words, but through actions that strengthen national cohesion and development.
