The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has launched a scathing attack on government over what it describes as “dangerous institutional failure,” citing the prolonged closure of the Weija Pediatric Hospital, worsening food insecurity, and the deepening crisis in cocoa sector.
Addressing a packed press conference at the GNAT Hall in Accra on Monday (25 May), Convener of the CDM, Samuel Doku, accused the state of presiding over “administrative paralysis” while critical national sectors deteriorate.
“A completed hospital that remains closed is not infrastructure development ; it is administrative paralysis,” Mr. Doku declared to applause from civil society groups and organized labour representatives gathered at the event.
The pressure group said the continued shutdown of the Weija Pediatric Hospital exposes glaring weaknesses in governance, procurement systems, and institutional coordination.
“Nothing captures the contradiction of our governance system more clearly than the current situation surrounding the Weija Pediatric Hospital,” Doku said. “A fully built specialist children’s hospital meant to save lives remains inaccessible because of procurement disputes, financial disagreements, and administrative delays. This is unacceptable.”
The CDM expressed outrage over reports of alleged procurement inflation tied to equipment meant for the facility, insisting the allegations demand immediate independent investigation.
“The allegations suggesting some equipment may have been overpriced several times above market value are deeply disturbing,” Doku stressed. “The people of Ghana deserve answers. Development partners deserve accountability. Taxpayers deserve transparency. Above all, our children deserve healthcare.”
According to the group, the failure to operationalise the hospital despite repeated government assurances amounts to a moral failure with deadly consequences for vulnerable children and struggling families seeking specialized healthcare.
“At a time many Ghanaian families cannot access specialized pediatric care, this continued closure is not merely an administrative setback , it is a moral governance failure,” he added.
