High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, has emerged the winner of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in the Ayawaso East Constituency, overturning pre-election forecasts by Global InfoAnalytics that had placed him behind rival Hajia Amina Adam.
The closely contested primary concluded Saturday with provisional results showing Baba Jamal at 431 votes, ahead of Hajia Amina Adam with 399, constituency chairman Mohammed Ramne with 88, Dr Yakubu Azindow with 45, and Najib Sani with 1.
The outcome defied the Global InfoAnalytics survey released earlier in the week, which had shown Hajia Amina Adam leading with 58% support among delegates and Baba Jamal at 32%.
Baba Jamal dismissed the poll prior to voting, saying delegates would exercise independent judgment and that the results would test the credibility of the survey.
Voting was conducted under heightened scrutiny following reports of alleged inducement and vote-buying at some polling centers.
In response, the NDC national leadership condemned the alleged misconduct and launched a full-scale investigation.
General Secretary Hon. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey said the party would take swift disciplinary action against any candidate found culpable and warned that future infractions could result in drastic sanctions, including possible election cancellations.
Baba Jamal defended his campaign, insisting that any gifts or gestures offered were not intended to influence delegates’ choices.
“Sharing items as gifts is not meant to sway votes, and the results today show delegates have exercised their judgment independently,” he said.
With this victory, Baba Jamal is now set to represent the NDC in the 3 March by-election, a key contest in Greater Accra, as the party seeks to retain the Ayawaso East seat while ensuring the integrity of its internal democratic processes.
