Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia has argued that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) would struggle to identify new policies introduced in 2025 that directly delivered Ghana’s current macroeconomic stability.
Addressing Minority Members of Parliament as Parliament resumed, Bawumia questioned the government’s claims regarding economic gains, insisting that the current administration could not take full credit for recent improvements in macroeconomic indicators.
“If you ask the NDC to name three new policies that they implemented in 2025 that achieved this stability, they cannot,” he said.
He argued that the administration’s claims of economic stability could not be separated from programmes introduced under the previous government, particularly the gold-for-reserves initiative.
According to him, the programme played a significant role in strengthening macroeconomic conditions and should not be presented as a product of new government policies.
Bawumia further stated that economic stability should not be viewed only through statistical indicators, but rather through its impact on the daily lives of citizens.
“We are not interested in statistical stability on itself,” he said, adding that the real test was whether the gains translated into lower living costs and improved conditions for ordinary Ghanaians.
He urged Minority lawmakers to continue highlighting the experiences of citizens across various sectors and use Parliament as a platform to raise concerns where economic relief had not been felt.
Bawumia also commended the Minority for drawing attention to challenges affecting groups such as farmers, while calling for broader scrutiny across other sectors of the economy.
The government has previously cited improving macroeconomic indicators, including currency stability and easing inflationary pressures, as signs of economic recovery.
