The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says its job-creation agenda does not guarantee automatic public sector employment for all young people, with party officials stressing skills training and entrepreneurship over expanded government payrolls.
NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said on Wednesday that campaign promises addressing unemployment had been widely misunderstood as pledges of automatic government appointments.
Speaking in the Nandom Constituency, he said youth unemployment remained a major national challenge but warned against expectations that every young person would receive a civil service job if the party comes to power.
“It is true that when we were campaigning, the biggest problem in the country then and is still the biggest problem now is youth unemployment,” he said, according to remarks delivered to supporters. “We promised initiatives to address the unemployment issue.”
He added that some supporters had interpreted the pledge as an assurance of public sector jobs for all.
“Some of you have interpreted that to mean that everybody will be given an appointment letter to work in government service. That is not what we mean,” he said.
Instead, he said the party’s approach would focus on equipping young people with vocational and entrepreneurial skills, alongside access to startup capital, to encourage self-employment and private sector growth.
“What we mean is that when a country is growing, it gets to a point where other means of employment become more rewarding than government work,” he said.
He said government could not realistically absorb all unemployed youth into the civil service, adding that job creation must extend beyond public sector hiring.
