Ayawaso East by-election: EC research director reports smooth voting amid low turnout in early hours

Fred Tetteh, director of research at the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), has reported that voting has been largely peaceful in the early hours of polling in Ayawaso East, Greater Accra, though turnout remains low in some areas.

The Ayawaso East by-election is taking place today (Tuesday 3 March) following the death in January this year of Naser Touré Mahama, the four-term MP for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The by-election in this area with a high population of Muslims is also coinciding with the Ramadan period of fasting.

Speaking to the media at polling stations, Tetteh said he had observed voter participation of between 10% and 25% in most locations, which he described as below average.

Despite the lower-than-expected turnout, he praised the overall conduct of the by-election so far.

“The presence of the police is a critical factor contributing to a peaceful process,” he said. “Even though polling stations are massive and sometimes not very conducive, the officials and agents of the candidates have been competent.”

Transparency is key

Tetteh also commended the media for their coverage across polling stations in the constituency and stressed the importance of transparent reporting.

He concluded that the voting process was proceeding smoothly, despite minor challenges, and is being well managed by all parties.
