Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has alleged political persecution in the detention of its activist Kwame Baffoe Abronye, citing what it calls a troubling pattern in the handling of cases involving party members.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (19 May), Haruna Mohammed, deputy general secretary of the NPP, said the legal process appeared selective and biased.
“There seems to be a pattern on how Abronye is being handled and other political cases involving the NPP,” he said.
Mohammed argued that Abronye’s case, which involves alleged speech-related offences, should have been treated as a civil matter rather than a criminal prosecution.
“Where there is civil remedy, criminal prosecution becomes political,” he said.
He also questioned the decision to remand Abronye, saying it was disproportionate given that the accused had not been convicted.
The NPP official further claimed that no formal remand order had been provided days after the court ruling.
“We have not had any official remand order for Abronye,” he said, adding that the party was concerned about broader implications for Ghana’s democracy.
