The Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, is expected to appear before a court in the Netherlands within the next 48 hours following his arrest at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.
The lawmaker was detained on Sunday, 8 May, over allegations of money laundering and involvement in romance scam-related offences, according to sources familiar with the case.
Sources close to his legal team told Citi News that Frimpong is expected to challenge the legality of both his arrest and subsequent detention when he appears before the court.
Parliament in Ghana confirmed the development through a statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, indicating that the House had been formally notified of the arrest.
The statement said parliamentary leadership is engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to gather further details about the circumstances surrounding the detention of the Independent MP.
It added that the Speaker of Parliament and leadership remain in close contact with the mission as efforts continue to establish the full facts of the case.
Meanwhile, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has assured that the MP is safe and stable in custody and has not suffered any harm.
The case is expected to draw significant attention both in Ghana and abroad as legal proceedings begin in the Netherlands.
