The police have been detailing how a traditional leader in the Central Region died after reportedly shooting himself during a funeral ceremony at Ayanfuri in the Diaso District.
Nana Kwabena Okyere, the Mmratehene of the Ayanfuri traditional area, is said to have accidentally discharged a pump-action gun during the funeral of Abusua Panyin Akwasi Kwateng on Saturday afternoon.
In a situation report widely shared online, the Ayanfuri police station received a distress call at about 3:20 p.m. indicating that the traditional ruler had sustained a gunshot injury and had been rushed to hospital.
Police said the victim was taken to the Ayanfuri Pentecost Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed he had suffered a deep gunshot wound to the abdomen with severe internal injuries.
A medical officer at the facility was quoted in the police report as saying the victim arrived with “a deep gunshot wound in the abdomen with his intestines protruding” and died while receiving treatment.
Police later visited the hospital but said the body had already been conveyed to the Dunkwa-On-Offin Municipal Hospital mortuary before their arrival.
Authorities said arrangements were being made to inspect the body as part of ongoing investigations into the incident, which has been classified as an unnatural death.
Police also said they are reviewing a video circulating on social media platform TikTok which allegedly shows the deceased pointing a pump-action firearm at his abdomen before it was discharged.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
