A court in Kumasi has fined six people for illegally dumping refuse at the Otumfuo Roundabout after they were arrested during an early morning operation by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), city authorities said on Monday.
The suspects, made up of three women and three men, were arrested at about 5:30 a.m. by metro guards who mounted surveillance at the location following repeated incidents of indiscriminate waste disposal.
The accused were identified as Atta Gyamfi, 55; Memuna Ishawu, 24; Maako Veronica, 31; Mariama Iddrisu, 64; Kwadwo Amuzu, 37; and Ebenezer Attakorah, 25.
They appeared before the Prempeh Assembly Hall Court 2, presided over by Her Worship Deborah Agyeiwaa Donkor, where they pleaded guilty to charges related to improper waste disposal.
The court fined each offender 100 penalty units, equivalent to 1,200 Ghana cedis. Five of the six convicts paid their fines, while Ebenezer Attakorah had not settled his penalty.
“And so, he is going in for 10 days in prison”, said KMA Public Relations Officer Henrietta Konadu adding that the arrests formed part of ongoing efforts by city authorities to clamp down on illegal dumping and improve sanitation in Kumasi.
Authorities have repeatedly warned residents against indiscriminate disposal of waste, particularly in public spaces and along major roads, as the city intensifies enforcement of sanitation by-laws.
