Abban calls for stronger apprenticeship system, questions “too many lawyers” debate

Private legal practitioner Alexander Abban has also questioned the argument that Ghana risks producing “too many lawyers” under the new legal education reforms, insisting instead that the country is already facing a shortage of legal professionals in key areas.

Speaking on The Big Bulletin with Frtiz Delanyo Amegashie on Monday (11 May), he argued that the justice system relies heavily on non-lawyers due to limited professional capacity, particularly in lower courts.

“If we had enough lawyers, the police should not be prosecuting cases. It is because we have a dearth of lawyers,” he said.

Abban maintained that success in the next five years should not be measured by restricting entry into the profession, but by improving the quality of training and expanding access to practical legal exposure.

He criticised what he described as weak coordination in legal apprenticeships, suggesting that the system should be strengthened through properly supervised law firm placements and courtroom exposure.

According to him, the current training model overemphasises theory at the expense of practice.

“What we have to strengthen is not another theory class. The law school was not meant for academics, it was meant for practice,” he noted.

He also called for a structured apprenticeship system that ensures law students are mentored within properly organised legal environments before being called to the bar.

Abban added that with proper reform, graduates would enter the profession with stronger practical grounding, reducing errors in legal practice and improving overall standards of advocacy and prosecution.
