The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the government and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) of political harassment following the re-arrest of a former state official and his wife.
In a statement signed by National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, the party said the detention of former National Food and Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) boss Hanan Abdul-Wahab and his wife amounted to an abuse of state power.
The NPP said the couple were re-arrested shortly after the Attorney-General withdrew charges against them in an ongoing criminal case, raising questions about the legal basis for their continued detention.
According to the statement, officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office denied lawyers access to the suspects for more than 24 hours — a move the party says violates constitutional guarantees.
“Access to legal counsel is not a favour granted by the state; it is a constitutional guarantee,” the statement said, describing the situation as “state-sponsored intimidation.”
The party argued that the continued detention was unjustified, noting that the couple had complied with all bail conditions and court appearances since their initial arrest.
It also questioned the Attorney-General’s decision to discontinue the case, suggesting it casts doubt on the strength of the prosecution.
The NPP warned that the perceived use of state institutions for political ends could undermine public trust in the justice system.
“Such actions risk eroding confidence in democratic governance and the rule of law,” the statement said.
The opposition party called on the government, led by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to ensure that state agencies operate within the law and respect the rights of citizens.
It demanded the immediate release of the couple and urged authorities to handle the case transparently.
The development has reignited debate over the handling of the case, particularly following the withdrawal of charges by the Attorney-General’s Department. Authorities have yet to publicly respond to the allegations.
