Northern transfers comment: “you don’t have to be sacked, just resign” — Ayew Afriye tells Greater Accra Regional Minister

A New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP Nana Ayew Afriye, has called on Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo to resign following her controversial comments suggesting postings to northern Ghana could be seen as punishment.

In a strongly worded reaction, Afriye said he was “very sad” over the remarks, arguing that they demean people from northern Ghana and those living in the region.

“I never knew the good Ghanaians, and the many great Northern brethren we have grown, lived and worked with… are the punished Ghanaians,” he said, in comments that have since circulated widely.

The Effiduase/Asokore Member of Parliament stopped short of calling for the minister’s dismissal but insisted she should step down voluntarily.

“Madam, you don’t have to be sacked, just resign,” he added.

Afriye also criticised the tone of the minister’s remarks, suggesting they reflected deeper sentiments.

“Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh,” he said.

His comments come after Ocloo issued a public apology, describing her earlier remarks as a “genuine slip in communication” and stressing that they did not reflect government policy or her personal views.

The issue has sparked debate with concerns about perceptions of regional inequality and sensitivity surrounding postings to less-resourced areas.

Ocloo has maintained that all public service postings are guided by established procedures and principles of fairness, and has urged the public to consider the matter clarified.
