A political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Joshua Zaato has expressed strong concerns about what he describes as a coordinated attempt by some state actors to silence critics of the current government.
According to him, the recent wave of arrests involving opposition figures shows a clear pattern that cannot be ignored.
This comes after the re-arrest of Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, which has renewed public debate about whether the law is being applied fairly.
Many have questioned why people perceived to be aligned with the opposition seem to face harsher bail conditions and stricter treatment.
Speaking in an interview with Asaase News, Zaato argued that the trend points to a deliberate attempt to intimidate specific groups.
According to him, “no matter how you dissect and bisect this issue, it seems that there are powerful forces within government who are bent on silencing the criticism of the current government.”
He explained that individuals being arrested or sent to court “seem to be sympathisers of the opposition Democratic Party,” while even “ordinary individuals” are receiving what he described as “extraordinary bail conditions” that leave them in police cells because they are unable to pay.
Zaato added that this repeated pattern “cannot be a coincidence,” calling it “a textbook definition of a coordinated attempt.”
He warned that if such actions continue, they could pose a serious threat to free speech, public criticism, and the foundations of Ghana’s democratic space.
