New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has criticised a government-backed decision to reintroduce entrance examinations for admission to the Ghana School of Law, describing it as a “betrayal of trust” against law students.
His comments follow a memo from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s Faculty of Law informing final-year students that the Independent Examination Committee of the General Legal Council had rescheduled the Ghana School of Law entrance examinations to 31 July.
The memo also indicated adjustments to the academic calendar, including revised end-of-semester examinations in May and June.
In a statement, Assafuah said the decision marked a reversal of earlier assurances that the entrance examination system would be scrapped, accusing the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of misleading students during the 2024 election campaign.
“This is not governance – it is a reckless disregard for the future of our young people,” he said.
He argued that students had made academic decisions based on assurances that the entrance examinations would be abolished, only to now face what he described as a sudden policy shift.
The lawmaker also criticised public comments by some government-aligned MPs who had previously encouraged students to prepare on the assumption that the exams would not take place.
Assafuah called on the government to either withdraw the directive requiring students to sit the exams or issue a public apology and clarify the legal education reform process.
He said the situation reflected broader concerns about policy consistency and trust in governance, particularly in the education sector.
The Ghana School of Law entrance examination has long been a contentious issue, with debates over access, standards and reforms to legal education recurring in recent years.
The government has yet to formally respond to the latest criticism.
