Mahama assures La residents of hospital return after years of delay

President John Dramani Mahama has assured residents of La and surrounding communities that the reconstruction of the La General Hospital will be completed and ready for commissioning by November 2027.

The assurance followed a site inspection of the project, where the president, accompanied by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, expressed satisfaction with the pace of work, noting significant progress since 2025.

The hospital’s demolition and prolonged delay have been a major concern for residents, forcing thousands to rely on facilities such as the 37 Military Hospital and Greater Accra Regional Hospital, both of which have faced increased patient loads.

Mahama acknowledged the strain the closure has placed on healthcare delivery in the capital, describing the project as a critical priority.

“The closure of this facility has been difficult for the people of La, and we must maintain this momentum to meet our deadline,” he said, commending contractors for steady progress.

Interim emergency measures

To address immediate healthcare gaps, the president announced plans to upgrade the COVID-era emergency centre at Burma Camp into a fully functional emergency facility.

The upgraded centre is expected to handle a range of urgent cases, helping to reduce delays and ease pressure on existing hospitals in the Accra East district.

Mahama said the move aligns with the government’s broader push toward accessible healthcare under its Free Primary Healthcare policy, which emphasises preventive care and community-level services.

Project back on track

Providing background, Akandoh said the redevelopment project, which began in 2020, stalled for several years due to funding and payment challenges.

He noted that work only resumed at full scale in 2025 after financial issues were resolved.

“The issues that plagued this project in the past have been resolved. We are now in a phase of consistent delivery,” the minister said.

He added that the completed facility will serve more than 50,000 residents in La and surrounding areas, offering modern infrastructure for both patients and healthcare workers.

The new La General Hospital is expected to be a multi-storey, ultra-modern facility equipped with advanced diagnostic systems, maternity units and specialised surgical theatres.

For residents, the projected completion marks the anticipated return of a key healthcare institution that has been absent for nearly seven years.
