Chinese technology giants Tencent Holdings and Alibaba Group are reportedly in discussions to invest in artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek, as global competition in advanced AI development intensifies.
According to industry reports, the talks involve a potential funding round that could value DeepSeek at more than $20 billion, reflecting strong investor interest in the fast-growing AI sector.
DeepSeek, which is owned by Chinese hedge fund High-Flyer Capital Management, is said to be seeking to raise significant new capital to support the development of its AI models, including systems focused on advanced reasoning and autonomous agents.
The discussions are still ongoing, with both the final valuation and investment size expected to change as negotiations progress.
Neither Tencent, Alibaba nor DeepSeek has publicly commented on the reported talks.
The funding interest highlights the rising cost of building and scaling cutting-edge artificial intelligence systems, particularly as firms compete to develop more sophisticated models.
DeepSeek has recently attracted global attention following earlier reports of its expansion plans and its rapid rise within China’s AI ecosystem.
The company’s emergence earlier in 2025 also sparked wider reactions in global tech markets, underlining the growing influence of Chinese AI firms in the sector.
Analysts say the potential involvement of major tech players like Tencent and Alibaba could further accelerate DeepSeek’s development and strengthen China’s position in the global AI race.
