An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a self-styled spiritualist, Nana Adwoa Yamoah, to three years in prison for defrauding a man of GHC95,100 through a series of false claims involving chieftaincy and spiritual rituals.
Yamoah, aged 35 and based at Teshie, pleaded guilty to defrauding by false pretences and operating without registration and a licence.
Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Kingsley Oppong told the court, presided over by Dennis Eyram Fumey, that the complainant, Douglas Abu, is unemployed and resides at Ntotroso in the Ashanti Region.
The court heard that in 2025, a witness, Grace Fosua, introduced Abu to Yamoah as a spiritualist who could assist him in becoming chief of Ntotroso.
Yamoah allegedly claimed she had links with the Asantehene and could secure Abu’s enstoolment, after which she collected various sums of money from him with assurances that the process would be completed by January.
She also allegedly took GH¢51,000 from him under the pretext of doubling the amount and further convinced him to travel to Benin for spiritual fortification, an exercise that never took place.
Prosecution said Abu later became suspicious, demanded a refund, but did not recover his money, prompting him to report the matter to police, leading to Yamoah’s arrest on 9 March 2026.
Investigations further established that she was not registered with the Traditional Medicine Practice Council and had allegedly used similar schemes on other victims.
The court convicted her on her own plea.
Sentencing was initially deferred pending a pregnancy test, which later proved negative, after which she was handed a three-year custodial sentence.
