A member of Parliament’s Energy Committee, Michael Kwasi Aidoo, has raised serious concerns over reported technical failures at the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant, warning that the situation could have significant implications for Ghana’s energy security.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (20 April), the MP described reported issues with the Burner Management System (BMS) and Heat Management System (HMS) as “critical failures” in gas processing operations.
“These are core systems. If they fail, it affects the entire plant and can even create safety risks, including fire hazards,” he said.
Aidoo referenced a maintenance exercise conducted in August 2025, authorised by the Ministry of Energy, during which two foreign firms were contracted to service the plant. He said concerns were raised at the time about the effectiveness of the work done.
He also questioned why Ghana Gas reportedly had to bring in external experts shortly after the maintenance, suggesting possible shortcomings in execution or oversight.
The MP further alleged inconsistencies in official communications from Ghana Gas regarding the status of repairs and system replacements.
“If there are contradictions in public statements, then there must be a bipartisan inquiry to establish the truth,” he added.
Aidoo warned that failures in gas processing infrastructure could force Ghana to rely on more expensive alternative fuels, increasing costs to the state and consumers.
He said Parliament’s Energy Committee is expected to meet Ghana Gas within the week to seek clarification and assess next steps.
