Ghana’s first female boxing champion, Abigail Kwartekaa, has raised concerns over what she describes as a lack of support and recognition from boxing authorities following her historic title win.
Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, Kwartekaa said she received no financial reward or additional support from the sport’s governing structures after securing the championship.
When asked what she received beyond the title belt, she was direct: “They don’t give you anything… Nothing, yes.”
Pressed further on whether there was any cash prize or incentive, she maintained that no such support was provided.
Although she is affiliated with the Ghana Boxing Association, Kwartekaa said her experience since winning the title has been marked by disappointment and neglect.
“Yes, but the Ghana Boxing Authority doesn’t do anything for me,” she said, suggesting a disconnect between athletes and the institution expected to support them.
She also pointed to what she believes may be unequal treatment between male and female boxers, alleging that men appear to benefit more from recognition and incentives after major wins.
“I was very sad because if the men go through, they do something special for them. But I mean, they never do anything for the women,” she said.
Kwartekaa further expressed frustration over what she described as poor communication from the association, adding that she has been left uncertain about her next steps in the sport.
“They never call me, so I don’t know what I’m doing now,” she lamented.
Her comments have reignited conversations about athlete welfare in Ghana, particularly the structures in place to support female athletes after major sporting achievements, and whether institutional backing matches the country’s growing sporting ambitions.
