The arrest of some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Karaga has sparked strong reactions among party supporters, leading to a protest that forced the constituency chairman, Alhaji Amadu Baba, to flee the area.
The incident, which occurred earlier this morning, saw a group of aggrieved supporters storm the chairman’s residence to demand answers over the arrest of their colleagues.
The protesters accused party leadership of failing to protect its own members, describing the situation as unfair and deeply troubling.
According to the supporters, those arrested were involved in supporting one Adugali in the installation of a warrior chief, an activity they insist should not have resulted in police action.
They questioned why individuals believed to be loyal NDC members would be targeted, especially when the party is seen as having strong influence in the area.
Their anger was further fueled by the imposition of a curfew on the Karaga township, which they say has disrupted daily life and economic activities.
The demonstration quickly escalated as tensions rose, forcing Alhaji Amadu Baba to abandon his residence and seek safety in Tamale.
Eyewitnesses say the protesters were visibly upset, chanting and demanding immediate intervention from party authorities. The situation created fear among residents, with many calling for calm and urging both party leaders and security agencies to address the concerns before the situation deteriorates further.
Meanwhile, there have been calls for dialogue to resolve the impasse and restore peace in the community. Some opinion leaders have appealed to the NDC hierarchy to engage the aggrieved supporters and clarify the circumstances surrounding the arrests and the curfew.
They warn that failure to act swiftly could deepen divisions within the party at the constituency level and further destabilize the already tense situation in Karaga.
