Update: Berekum Chelsea player Dominic Frimpong dies after gunmen attack team bus

Ghana Premier League side Berekum Chelsea has confirmed that one of its players, Dominic Frimpong, has died following an armed robbery attack on the team’s bus along a highway in Ghana’s western belt.

The club said the incident occurred on Sunday (April 12) while the team was returning to Berekum from Samreboi, when a group of masked men blocked the road.

According to the club, the attackers, armed with guns and assault rifles, opened fire on the bus as the driver attempted to reverse.

Players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover during the attack.

Frimpong, who was initially reported to have been seriously injured, later died from his injuries, the club said.

The club expressed gratitude to a police patrol team for its swift response, as well as to residents of Ashiresu who provided temporary shelter for players and officials.

Officials of Bibiani Gold Stars and the Ghana Football Association were also commended for their support following the incident.

Police have not yet issued an official statement.

The attack has renewed concerns over security on some highways in Ghana, particularly in areas linking mining and forest communities.
