MultiChoice cuts DStv decoder prices, introduces split billing and freezes annual price hikes after Canal+ takeover

Pay-TV giant MultiChoice has announced a major overhaul of its DStv pricing model, including reduced decoder prices, a new split billing system, and a suspension of annual subscription price increases.

The changes form part of a broader turnaround strategy following the acquisition of the MultiChoice Group by Canal+ in late 2025, aimed at restoring profitability and expanding its subscriber base across Africa.

The combined Canal+ and MultiChoice operation now serves about 42.3 million subscribers across the continent, generating revenues of €8.7 billion and more than €1 billion in EBITDA.

Under the new strategy, Canal+ has committed to an investment of about R1.9 billion to drive subscriber growth and reverse recent declines.

The company says it is focusing on strengthening local content production, retaining key sports broadcasting rights, and enhancing its flagship SuperSport offering.

It is also streamlining DStv’s pricing structures, branding, and marketing to improve customer value and attract new subscribers.

As part of the restructuring, plans are also underway for a secondary inward listing of Canal+ on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange by the first half of 2026, a move expected to widen investor participation.

Customers are already beginning to feel the impact of the new strategy. For the first time in years, MultiChoice did not implement a price increase on 1 April, marking a shift in its pricing approach.

The company has also introduced a split billing feature, allowing subscribers to share subscription costs among multiple users.

Additionally, decoder prices have been significantly reduced, while entry-level packages have been made more affordable to widen access.

A DStv Stream Premium package is now available at about R399 per month, while lower-cost options include EasyView at R15 and Access packages at R75 per month.

Canal+ Africa CEO David Mignot says the changes are only the beginning of a broader transformation of the platform.

He noted that subscribers should expect a stronger combined content offering, drawing from both Canal+’s extensive European catalogue and MultiChoice’s African programming strength.

According to him, the merged libraries will provide thousands of hours of content annually across multiple languages, significantly expanding viewing options for customers.

The company says the long-term goal is to build a vast global content archive while making DStv more accessible and competitive in a changing media landscape.
