The abandoned affordable housing project in Wamale, a suburb of the Tamale Metropolis in the Northern Region, has reportedly become a safe haven for criminal elements, raising serious concerns among residents.
The project, which was initiated during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, was aimed at addressing the growing housing deficit in the area. However, years after its commencement, the project remains uncompleted and has been left to deteriorate under harsh weather conditions.
Residents say successive governments have failed to prioritise the completion of the project, leaving the structures in a deplorable state.
What was once envisioned as a solution to housing challenges has now turned into a security threat. According to community members, the abandoned buildings are being used as hideouts by suspected criminals, creating fear and insecurity within the neighbourhood.
The Assemblyman for the area, Ziblim Abu, has expressed deep concern over the situation, calling on the government to urgently intervene.
In an interview with Asaase News, he stressed that completing the housing project would not only provide accommodation for residents but also help eliminate the criminal activities associated with the abandoned site.
He added that the project, if completed, could contribute significantly to the economic growth and development of the area.
Some residents also shared their frustrations, noting that they grew up witnessing the project in its stalled state.
One resident, Nuhu Ibrahim, described the situation as unfortunate, attributing the neglect to changes in government over the years.
He lamented that what should have been a beneficial initiative has now become a burden on the community.
The residents are therefore appealing to the current government to take swift action to complete the project.
They believe that reviving the abandoned housing scheme will not only restore hope but also improve security and living conditions in Wamale and its surrounding communities.
