The 2028 presidential flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed condolences to victims of the building collapse in Accra Newtown that left several people dead and others injured.
In a statement on Sunday, Bawumia said he had received news of the incident “with sadness,” describing it as a tragic event at a site reportedly used for Christian worship.
“May the lives lost painfully rest in peace, and my deepest sympathy goes to the families,” he said.
He also expressed hope that those still trapped would be rescued safely and that the injured would recover quickly.
“I pray that all trapped are brought out safely, and the injured recover swiftly,” he added.
Bawumia commended emergency responders for their efforts, praising rescue teams for working to save lives in the aftermath of the collapse.
The incident, which occurred earlier on Sunday, has renewed concerns about building safety and enforcement of construction regulations in parts of Ghana.
We’re helpless
Earlier, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, speaking at the scene, said some 45 worshippers had been inside the unfinished building at the time, a site regularly used for Sunday services.
“Maybe arising out of the rains and other factors unknown to all of us, the building caved in,” he said, noting that emergency teams were facing limitations in their capacity.
“The Ghana Police Service is heavily represented here, alongside the Ghana Fire Service and NADMO. But we are helpless at some point because of the inadequacies of the capacity of our rescue operations in terms of what is required,” Iddrisu added.
The collapsed structure is located within the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School premises, an unfinished building regularly used for worship on Sundays.
Security had been tightened around the site as anxious onlookers gather, hoping for more survivors to be rescued.
