Kumasi: 27-year-old mechanic gets eight years after guilty plea in GHC480,000 robbery case

The Asokwa Circuit Court 1 in Kumasi has sentenced a 27-year-old Nigerian mechanic, Kennedy Uduoka Onuebu, to a total of eight years in prison after he pleaded guilty to multiple robbery-related charges.

Presiding judge Fred Obikyere handed down five-year sentences on counts of conspiracy and unlawful damage, and eight-year terms on counts of conspiracy to steal and stealing. The sentences are to run concurrently.

Brief facts

Onuebu had been charged alongside another Nigerian national, Micheal Chinedu, who remains at large.

Prosecutors told the court that on 5 March the two men trailed a driver, George Forkuo, who had withdrawn 479,500 Ghana cedis from a bank in Kumasi.

At about 2:20 p.m., along the Asokwa New Road, the suspects attacked the complainant while he had stopped to buy gas. Onuebu, riding pillion on a motorbike, allegedly smashed the vehicle’s door glass with a metal object and made away with the cash.

The court heard that as the suspects attempted to flee, the complainant confronted them, causing both men to fall off the motorbike. Chinedu escaped, but Onuebu was apprehended at the scene with the money and handed over to police.

During investigations, Onuebu admitted to the offences in his caution statement, the prosecution said.

The court further ordered that efforts be intensified to arrest Chinedu and bring him before the court to face justice, as proceedings in relation to him remain ongoing.
