Workers of the National Identification Authority (NIA), under the Public Services Workers’ Union of the Trades Union Congress, have commenced an indefinite nationwide strike effective Wednesday, 13 May, 2026.
The industrial action follows unresolved concerns over the approval and implementation of migration reports tied to the workers’ conditions of service.
In a joint statement signed by Assistant Divisional Secretary Godsway Ayivor and Divisional Chairman Bismark Francis Bangfudem Nyuzaghl, the union directed all members across the country not to report to work from midnight on Tuesday, 12 May, until further notice.
“Effective 12:00 midnight, the indefinite strike is fully activated. Accordingly, no member of the NIA Division is expected to show up for work until further notice,” the statement said.
The union further instructed regional executives to establish monitoring teams to ensure strict compliance with the directive across all NIA offices nationwide.
“All regional executives and members are also directed to form monitoring units, go round the various offices, and ensure full compliance with the strike without fail,” it added.
Members encountering challenges during the strike have been advised to report to divisional leadership for support, as the union reaffirmed its resolve to sustain the action.
“In solidarity, we stand. No retreat, no surrender until victory,” the statement declared.
The strike is expected to disrupt key services provided by the NIA, including the registration and issuance of the Ghana Card, as well as other identity management services across the country.
Meanwhile, NIA management has appealed to the striking workers to suspend the action and allow the government an additional two weeks to complete processes related to the approval and implementation of the migration reports.
However, the union has indicated it will proceed with the strike until its demands are met.
