The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) has officially endorsed a United Nations resolution filed by Ghana declaring the trafficking and racialised, intergenerational chattel enslavement of Africans as one of the gravest crimes against humanity.
The endorsement comes ahead of the International Day of Remembrance for Victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, highlighting the urgent need for justice and accountability for historical atrocities.
The CBC praised the African Union (AU) for dedicating 2025 as the year of “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations” and for launching a Decade of Action (2026–2035) to drive reparative justice across Africa.
“History calls for courage, not convenience,” the CBC said. “This resolution challenges the world to confront entrenched injustices and deliver meaningful accountability for Africans and the African diaspora.”
The caucus urged UN member states to act decisively, adopt the resolution, and commit to a world free from the legacies of slavery, colonialism, and apartheid—which the AU classifies as crimes against humanity.
Human rights advocates describe the CBC’s move as a landmark step toward global recognition of African suffering and the fight for reparations.
