Kumasi: SSNIT seeks to bridge awareness gap as assets rise to over GHC25bn

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) is intensifying engagement with workers to close an awareness gap about its operations, as the pension fund reports improved performance under ongoing reforms.

Deputy Director-General of SSNIT in charge of operations and benefits, Adam Sulley says a regional forum held in Kumasi on Wednesday (18 March), with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) was aimed at educating members on enrolment processes, records management, benefits and payment systems.

“As part of our regional engagement with TUC members, we are here in Kumasi to interact with them at the regional level so they can also educate their members at the district level,” he said.

He identified limited public understanding of SSNIT’s operations as a major challenge.

“The biggest problem we have is a certain gap between what we do and what they know,” he said, adding that the engagement was designed to bridge that gap and improve confidence in the scheme.

Sulley said SSNIT is rolling out reforms including co-location services, allowing contributors to access services without visiting SSNIT branches, as well as improvements in data systems and processing efficiency.

He noted that claims processing has improved significantly, with death benefits expected to be paid within two weeks if all required documentation is provided.

SSNIT’s financial position has also strengthened, with total assets rising from about 20 billion cedis in 2024 to over 25 billion cedis in 2025, supported by improved investment strategies.

“The investment is looking very good. We are rebalancing our assets and getting returns,” he said, adding that some SSNIT-owned hotels, including Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, are posting improved financial performance.

The forum forms part of SSNIT’s broader outreach to deepen pension literacy and expand participation, as the fund seeks to translate recent operational and financial gains into better outcomes for contributors.
