The government has convened its second in a series of social dialogues, this time bringing together organised labour leaders to discuss key issues affecting workers across Ghana.
The engagement, held under the direction of President John Mahama, was facilitated by Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, Member of Parliament for Wa Central and Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment.
Speaking at the event, Minister Pelpuo welcomed labour representatives, noting that the dialogue was intended to foster consultation and engagement between the government and workers, whose efforts he described as central to the nation’s economic growth.
“This dialogue has been called to create room and opportunity for consultation and engagement between government on the one hand and organised labour, around whose hard work the Ghanaian economy turns, on the other,” he said.
Minister Pelpuo also highlighted that the meeting would allow workers to raise concerns about their welfare, salaries, and labour conditions, emphasising the government’s commitment to transparency and partnership.
He assured participants that, as social democrats, the ruling party views organised labour as a natural ally. “We align very much with labour. Labour is a friend to this party. In everything we do, we will open up very clearly to you,” he said.
The dialogue featured representatives from 43 labour groupings, including the Trades Union Congress and the Ghana Federation of Labour, who had the opportunity to interact directly with the government on pressing labour issues.
