The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Justin Frimpong Koduah, has assured party members that the introduction of an online membership registration platform will not allow political opponents to infiltrate the party’s register or influence its internal elections.
The digital platform is intended to address difficulties faced by some Ghanaians who wish to join the NPP but are unable to register at their polling stations due to time constraints.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday (12 March), Koduah said the system is open to all Ghanaians interested in becoming members of the party, but safeguards would ensure that only verified members can vote or contest positions during internal elections.
“I have received questions that when we are doing online registration it means our opponents or people who are not NPP members may use this opportunity to register,” he said.
“My simple response to them is that every Ghanaian has the right to register to become a member of the New Patriotic Party.”
Koduah added that even members of rival parties, including the chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, could sign up if they wished.
“Even if Asiedu Nketiah wants to register to become a member of the NPP… he will be allowed,” he said, adding that strict verification processes would determine who qualifies to vote or contest in party elections.
He also announced that physical registration at polling stations will take place on weekends throughout March to complement the online process and address concerns about attempts by some party executives to control the registration exercise.
