The Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Anthony Namon, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of deliberately targeting the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, in a bid to weaken the opposition party.
Speaking during a visit by Mr Boasiako to the Upper East Region as part of consultations ahead of his ambition to become the NPP’s national chairman, Mr Namon said the ruling party’s actions are aimed at crippling the NPP by focusing on influential figures within the party.
“The NDC knows there is something special about him. Their policy has been that they should decapitate the NPP, and so you will see that all those they are tackling, it is a way of crippling the party in some way, and Wontumi is one of them,” he said.
He added that despite the pressure, the NPP would continue to rally behind the Ashanti Regional Chairman.
“By the grace of God, it cannot happen,” Mr Namon said.
Long standing support
Mr Namon also pointed to Mr Boasiako’s longstanding support for the party, recalling his role in helping finance a key party event when resources were limited.
“In 2014 when we were looking for funding to organise the first national congress in the northern part of Ghana, we didn’t have money. It was only a few people who supported us and he was one of them. He gave us resources for the congress to come off,” he said.
Next to lead
According to him, Mr Boasiako’s leadership in the Ashanti Region — widely regarded as the stronghold of the NPP — places him in a strong position to lead the party at the national level.
“Having been the chairman in the heart of the party, the Ashanti Region, it will not be conclusive if it ends there,” he said.
Mr Namon added that Mr Boasiako possesses the qualities needed to lead the party as national chairman.
“He has the temperament, he has the heart to lead the party as a national chairman,” he stated.
Mr Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, is currently seeking support within the party as the NPP prepares for its internal leadership contest.
