President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned the Asharami Ghana, a new liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier expected to strengthen Ghana’s energy infrastructure and support the country’s transition to cleaner fuels.
The commissioning ceremony took place on Thursday in South Korea, where the vessel was completed.
According to the presidency, the new vessel forms part of broader efforts to reinforce the supply chain for Liquefied Petroleum Gas and improve energy security for Ghana and the wider West African region.
Strengthening the LPG supply chain
Speaking at the event, President Mahama described the commissioning as more than a ceremonial occasion, noting that it represents a major milestone in strengthening infrastructure supporting the global LPG supply chain.
“This is more than a ceremonial occasion,” he said. “It marks a significant milestone in strengthening the infrastructure that underpins the global liquefied petroleum gas supply chain.”
The President emphasised that energy access and the transition to cleaner fuels remain key global challenges, adding that LPG continues to play an important role in addressing both concerns.
Strategic partnerships for energy security
President Mahama said the development highlights the value of partnerships and forward-looking investments in expanding energy infrastructure.
He noted that the project demonstrates the power of strategic collaboration aimed at improving energy security across Ghana and the broader African continent.
According to him, Ghana recognises the transformative potential of LPG in promoting socio-economic development while expanding access to cleaner energy options for households and industries.
Cleaner energy transition
The vessel’s commissioning aligns with Ghana’s broader efforts to modernise its energy sector and reduce reliance on more polluting fuels.
LPG has increasingly been promoted as a cleaner alternative for cooking and other domestic uses, particularly as the country works to reduce deforestation linked to charcoal and firewood consumption.
Officials say the addition of the Asharami Ghana vessel will strengthen supply logistics and support the reliable delivery of LPG to meet growing demand.
The presidency said the development signals another step in Ghana’s push to strengthen energy infrastructure while advancing sustainable fuel solutions.
