At least seventy-one fishermen were rescued on Thursday after being attacked at sea by armed assailants off Senya Breku in Ghana’s Central Region, authorities said.
The victims were brought to shore in batches by a joint team of the Marine Police and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), with all confirmed safe, according to official reports.
Initial accounts indicate the fishermen, who had set out early Thursday morning for a routine fishing trip, were ambushed on their return.
Attackers allegedly opened fire and stole outboard motors and generator sets, leaving the crew stranded in the water.
Rescue efforts were complicated after the disabled boats drifted in different directions. Some crews managed to hook onto passing vessels and were towed to shore, while others were assisted by fellow fishermen.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation and the Ghana Police Service Criminal Investigation Department registered the survivors on arrival and arranged medical checks.
“But they are all fine; they are here; NADMO is taking their details; CID is taking their details; we are refreshing them a bit, and after that, we will let them go for a health check before we will allow them to go. Everybody is safe,” the lawmaker said
