Ghana Police Service warns public over fake electronic traffic violation notices

The Ghana Police Service has cautioned the public against a fraudulent electronic traffic offence notice circulating online, describing it as fake and not issued by the police.

In a public notice, the Service said it had observed with “deep concern” a viral message claiming to be an official traffic violation alert from the police and demanding payments from recipients for alleged infractions.

According to the Service, the notification is “false, fraudulent, invalid, and not coming from the Police Service.”

Police authorities warned individuals behind the circulation of the notices to desist immediately, stressing that the act constitutes a serious offence under the law. Perpetrators, it added, risk arrest and prosecution.

The Service also disclosed that it is working with several state institutions to prepare for a legitimate automated traffic law enforcement system aimed at improving compliance on the roads.

These include the Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Transport, National Road Safety Authority, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, National Insurance Commission, and the Ministry of Finance.

The Police said the institutions are engaging the Parliament of Ghana to amend road traffic regulations to allow the rollout of an automated enforcement programme known as Traffitech-GH in the coming months.

It assured the public that updates would be provided as the process advances and urged citizens to disregard any electronic traffic notices that do not originate from official police channels.
