Iconic Ghanaian musician and media veteran Jon Germain opened up about the evolution of African music, the rise of Afrobeat, and the potential challenges posed by artificial intelligence during a recent interview on Asaase Rush Hour.
Germain traced his career in music from the early 1990s, recalling his first professional recording in 1993 with the band MGKK4 and collaborations with British rock band Van Green. He described his 2008 album Love Zone and the hit song In Her Arms, revealing how a recording session while battling a cold unexpectedly produced a fan favorite.
He also reflected on the transformation of African music, noting that many contemporary Afrobeat tracks carry strong R&B influences, bridging global sounds with local rhythms. “I’ve been fighting for this to happen for like 40 years,” he said. “One day, there’s going to be an African guy singing R&B that can be compared to R. Kelly and all the top guys. And it’s happening.”
Germain expressed cautious concern about AI’s role in music creation. He recalled discovering that one of his younger son’s favorite songs on the Billboard charts was entirely AI-generated.
“It kills the excitement of spending months in the studio, getting the perfect song, writing the song, rewriting the verse, being mixed and mastered,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Germain remains optimistic about the future of music and Afrobeat’s global reach. He also teased new music, including a song titled Deep, reflecting his signature R&B style blended with modern influences, and spoke warmly about sharing these moments with his children in the studio.
